What is Total Knee Replacement (TKR)?

A Total Knee Replacement, medically termed Total Knee Arthroplasty, is the surgical reconstruction of an arthritic knee using metal alloy and high-grade polyethylene components that resurface the femur, tibia and patella. Indications include advanced osteoarthritis, rheumatoid disease and arthritis following trauma — particularly when activities of daily living have become impossible despite optimal non-surgical care. At Lux Hospitals Hyderabad, Dr. Hithesh utilises evidence-based implant systems and refined surgical workflows to give patients durable pain relief, restored alignment and lasting independence after surgery.

Recommended when severe arthritis affects two or three compartments of the knee with disabling pain, stiffness and deformity that physiotherapy, joint injections and bracing have failed to control adequately.

How the Procedure Works

1

Anaesthesia & Setup

Spinal or general anaesthesia is administered, a thigh tourniquet applied and the leg draped in standard sterile fashion.

2

Surgical Exposure

A vertical midline skin incision and medial parapatellar arthrotomy provide complete access to all three knee compartments.

3

Precision Bone Resection

Femoral, tibial and patellar surfaces are accurately cut using alignment jigs to recreate the natural mechanical axis.

4

Component Trialling

Provisional implants verify ligament balance, range of motion and patellar tracking before final components are chosen.

5

Final Fixation & Closure

Definitive implants are seated with bone cement or press-fit; layered closure is performed; rehabilitation begins on day one.

What makes total knee replacement work isn't the implant alone — it's the planning, the soft-tissue balance and the rehabilitation discipline. When all three come together, patients walk away with a knee they trust for life.
