Subacromial Decompression / Acromioplasty
Bone spurs and inflamed bursa beneath the acromion are removed arthroscopically — eliminating shoulder impingement and creating space for the rotator cuff tendons to glide painlessly.
What is Subacromial Decompression / Acromioplasty?
Subacromial Decompression, also termed Acromioplasty, is an arthroscopic procedure that creates additional room for the rotator cuff tendons by removing inflamed subacromial bursa, releasing the coracoacromial ligament where appropriate and shaving down bone spurs from the undersurface of the acromion. The procedure addresses subacromial impingement syndrome — a common cause of painful arc, weakness during overhead activity and disturbed sleep on the affected side. Dr. Hithesh performs subacromial decompression in Hyderabad as a same-day arthroscopic procedure, providing reliable pain relief and restored shoulder function with rapid recovery.
How the Procedure Works
Diagnostic Arthroscopy
Tiny portals allow inspection of the rotator cuff, biceps tendon and subacromial space to confirm impingement and rule out other pathology.
Bursectomy
Inflamed and thickened subacromial bursa is removed with an arthroscopic shaver, exposing the underside of the acromion clearly.
Coracoacromial Ligament Management
Where appropriate, the coracoacromial ligament is partially released to enlarge the subacromial space for cuff tendon gliding.
Acromioplasty
Bony spurs and the undersurface of the acromion are precisely shaved using a burr to flatten its contour effectively.
Closure & Mobilisation
Portals are closed with sutures or steri-strips; sling support and immediate gentle motion guide quick return to activity.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →Reliable relief from painful arc and impingement-related shoulder pain
- →Eliminates disabling night pain that interrupts sleep on affected side
- →Three tiny keyhole portals leave minimal cosmetic scarring afterwards
- →Day-care surgery with same-day discharge home and rapid mobilisation
- →Restores comfortable overhead motion essential for work and sport
- →Often combined with rotator cuff repair when both pathologies coexist
Subacromial decompression looks deceptively simple, but it relies on careful judgement — knowing exactly how much acromion to remove and where impingement really originates. Done well, the relief is dramatic and lasting.
