Targeted Decompression Surgery

Laminotomy

A small precise window is created in the lamina to decompress a single nerve root — preserving spinal stability while relieving sciatica from focal disc herniation or recess stenosis.

What is Laminotomy?

Laminotomy is a targeted spinal decompression procedure in which a small precise window is created within the lamina to relieve compression on a specific nerve root — without removing the entire lamina as in laminectomy. The technique is ideal for focal single-level pathology such as disc herniation, lateral recess stenosis or foraminal stenosis causing classic radicular leg pain. Because most of the lamina, facet joints and surrounding stabilising structures are preserved, postoperative spinal stability is maintained and recovery is significantly faster than full laminectomy. Dr. Hithesh performs laminotomy in Hyderabad through microsurgical technique for focal nerve compression problems.

Indicated for patients with focal nerve root compression — disc herniation, lateral recess stenosis or foraminal stenosis — causing radicular leg pain that has failed 6–8 weeks of structured conservative care.

How the Procedure Works

1

Anaesthesia & Positioning

General anaesthesia is delivered; the patient is positioned prone on a Wilson frame, providing safe access to the targeted lumbar level.

2

Targeted Incision

A small midline incision is made directly over the affected level under intraoperative fluoroscopic guidance for precise spinal localisation.

3

Selective Lamina Window

A targeted window is precisely created within the lamina using a high-speed burr — preserving most of the lamina and stabilising structures.

4

Nerve Decompression

The compressed nerve root is gently retracted and freed; any disc herniation, osteophyte or thickened ligament causing compression is removed.

5

Closure & Recovery

Soft tissue layers are closed with absorbable sutures; same-day walking begins; structured graded physiotherapy ensures complete spinal recovery.

Who Needs This Treatment?

  • Significantly less invasive than traditional full laminectomy decompression surgery
  • Preserves spinal stability and major surrounding stabilising structures effectively
  • Targeted single-level decompression with quick functional recovery overall
  • Provides reliable relief from sciatica and radiating leg pain
  • Smaller skin incision and considerably less muscle dissection during surgery
  • Excellent long-term functional outcomes with high patient satisfaction reported

When the problem is a single compressed nerve root, why disturb the entire spine? Laminotomy preserves stability while precisely solving the compression — it embodies the modern minimally invasive philosophy of spine surgery.
