Anatomic Total Shoulder Replacement (TSA)
The arthritic shoulder ball and socket are replaced with prosthetic components that preserve the natural ball-and-socket geometry — restoring smooth motion and pain-free function for advanced arthritis.
What is Anatomic Total Shoulder Replacement (TSA)?
Anatomic Total Shoulder Replacement (TSA) is the surgical replacement of the arthritic glenohumeral joint using prosthetic components that preserve the natural ball-and-socket configuration. The diseased humeral head is replaced with a polished metal ball, and the worn glenoid is resurfaced with a polyethylene cup — provided the rotator cuff is functionally intact. The procedure is the standard treatment for advanced primary osteoarthritis, post-traumatic arthritis and selected inflammatory arthropathies of the shoulder. Dr. Hithesh performs anatomic total shoulder replacement in Hyderabad to deliver reliable long-term pain relief and restored shoulder motion for patients with intact cuff function.
How the Procedure Works
Anaesthesia & Approach
General anaesthesia with interscalene block; a deltopectoral approach exposes the front of the shoulder joint cleanly.
Humeral Head Resection
The arthritic humeral head is precisely cut at the anatomic neck angle; the proximal humerus is prepared for the stem.
Glenoid Preparation
The arthritic glenoid is reamed to a smooth concave surface ready to accept the polyethylene cup component securely.
Implant Placement
The polyethylene glenoid cup is cemented; the humeral stem with appropriate metal head is press-fit or cemented in place.
Reduction & Closure
The shoulder is reduced; stability, range of motion and rotator cuff balance are confirmed; layered closure precedes rehabilitation.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →Excellent long-term pain relief from advanced shoulder osteoarthritis
- →Restores smooth, natural-feeling shoulder motion across all directions
- →Preserves the natural ball-and-socket geometry of the original joint
- →Modern implant designs reliably last fifteen to twenty years comfortably
- →Returns patients to recreational sports including golf, swimming and tennis
- →Outstanding long-term satisfaction in international shoulder replacement registries
When the rotator cuff is healthy and the glenoid has good bone, anatomic shoulder replacement remains hard to beat. It restores the natural geometry of the joint — and patients regain a shoulder that genuinely feels like theirs again.
